Over the weekend of 31 Oct – 2 Nov 2025, the city of Miri came alive with the thunder of punches, the rhythm of kicks, and the roar of the crowd as Permy Mall played host to the first-ever Miri Amateur Muaythai Challenge — a milestone event that placed Miri firmly on Borneo’s combat sports map.

The Muaythai ring stood proudly at the center of attention, surrounded by excited spectators and teams who had travelled from Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Mukah, Kapit, Brunei, West Malaysia, and of course, Miri itself. The energy was electric — more than 150 athletes stepped into the ring, many for the very first time. Despite the nerves, they fought with courage, fueled by the cheers of the crowd and the passion burning within.

Aside from amateur category bouts, on 1 NOV 2025, the crowd was serve a great show of grit, skills & action for the 10 semi-pro bouts. Culminating to the main event of Danny Huang (Warmonger)vs Putra Irfan (LION 30). Eighteen clubs participated in total, showcasing the growing strength and unity of the Muaythai community in the region. The event drew strong support from the local government, with YB Adam Yii Siew Sang gracing the event as the Guest of Honour and presenting prizes to the champions.



When the dust settled, Lion 30 roared loudest, emerging as the Overall Team Champion with an impressive medal haul:
🏅 13 Gold Medals (Amateur)
🥈 13 Silver Medals (Amateur)
🏆 Best Boxer Award
🥇 Semi-Pro Champion (67–71KG)
🥇 Semi-Pro Champion (60–63.5KG)

Meanwhile, Warmonger Training Academy Miri proudly represented the home crowd, earning 8 Golds, 3 Silvers, and the Main Event Trophy won by Danny Huang.
D30 Muaythai came in at 3rd placing with 4 Golds & 5 Silver.

Event Director Gavin Ghia Mattu expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support from athletes, fans, and sponsors.
“Every fighter who stepped into the ring walked out a winner . Their determination and heart truly reflect what Muaythai is all about — respect, discipline, and courage.”
He also credited the success to the joint efforts of Miri Muaythai Association, Sarawak Muaythai Association, and the dedicated organizing committee who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

Beyond the medals and trophies, what truly shone through was the sportsmanship and camaraderie built throughout the three-day event. Friendships were formed, respect was earned, and the fighting spirit of Miri grew stronger than ever.


On the 3rd day after all the action in the ring, there were Kendo Demonstration & also Muaythai traial for the general public. This was done to get interest of the public to see the beauty of martial arts & encourage newcomer to come & try out Muaythai.

Looking ahead, Gavin hopes to see even more combat sports events take place in Miri.
“This is just the beginning. We want to make Miri a hub for healthy, family-friendly combat sports tourism — because Miri has it all: great food, beautiful places, and the warmest people you’ll ever meet.”

As the final bell rang, one thing was clear — Miri didn’t just host a Muaythai event; it ignited a movement. The heart of Borneo now beats stronger with the spirit of Muaythai — and this is only Round One.
